We just couldn't get enough of fish camp this spring, so we headed back to the Catskills in June. The water levels were up and the weather was much warmer. (It actually got pretty hot toward the end of the week.) I spent the first two days on the West Branch of the Delaware. Fishing was tough, and I only caught a few small fish. I saw some beautiful browns but couldn't convince them to take my fly. (But I will be back!) We did really well the rest of the week on the Beaverkill. It was much more crowded this time around, with mass quantities of Jersey plates at every major pool, so we headed for the less popular stretches of the river. Jimmer and Hector came up for an evening, and then Jimmer came up the last day. Hector caught a real nice brown on the Willowemoc. Jimmer had a very good day on the Beaverkill at Acid Factory Run and at Barrel Pool. I caught a beautiful brown of 19 inches on a black ant at Acid Factory Run, up against the rocks. It was really something watching that big head come up for the ant! (I had tried about 20 different flies on him the day before with no luck!) I also did very well at Barrel Pool and Cemetery Pool in the evenings. I caught a lot of really nice fish on this trip. Aside from a few obnoxious people who were clueless with regard to proper fishing etiquette, it was a very good trip. There were lots of flies on the water, with some pretty good sulphur hatches and also some large olives (cornutas) coming off. |
