Savage River
I fished the Savage River on Thursday from about noon until 7 PM. The river was
in great shape and flowing between 80 and 100 CFS during the day. The water temp
was about 45F when I started. There were some Blue Quills, Baetis vagans, and
Quill Gordons hatching, along with some caddis, but very few fish were rising. I
started out fishing a streamer and picked up some nice browns during the first
couple of hours. There was a pretty good hatch of Baetis vagans in the
afternoon, with a large number of mayflies drifting in the foam of a back-eddy
near the head of one of the pools. I took a couple of photos of the bugs, after
getting a couple of browns on a streamer there. The fish were not interested in
the BWO duns at all. Just beyond this pool, I saw a nice brown come up and take
a fly off the surface. I eventually hooked and landed him using a Blue Quill
Comparadun, size 18. After that, I fished the pocket water with a size 16 mayfly
cripple pattern for a good part of the afternoon with great results. Though few
fish were actually surface feeding, I was able to drum up some nice browns. And
the ones that were feeding on top were very willing to take a dry fly (when
presented properly). I was able to get quite a few nice fish and had a really
great day on the Savage.
Youghiogheny River
Don and I fished the Yock on Friday. This is one of the most scenic rivers I
have ever fished. It was overcast with a cold front moving in, and a
thunderstorm eventually hit late in the afternoon. But we got a few hours of
some great fishing in. It was a streamer kind of day, and we were able to hook
up with lots of rainbows and also a couple of browns. It was a great day on the
river, and I really enjoyed fishing with Don and also watching him roll cast 75
feet from bank to bank. I had certainly never seen that before! The Yock is a
really nice river to fly fish, with a wide variety of water - all of which holds
some very nice trout. The rainbows are energetic leapers and loads of fun to
catch.
