A big male rainbow trout from the Taylor River
2023 Season
Our snowpack is well above average in the Gunnison Valley, and we should have decent water/flows all summer and into fall. I would expect a big runoff on the East River, which when combined with the Taylor River, could result in very high water, similar to 2019 when the Gunnison River was closed down for several weeks. Once the rivers settle down after runoff, fishing will really turn on. As always, please take good care of the trout by handling them as little as possible and always with wet hands. Please help protect this valuable resource and do your part on the river.
For a general overview of insect activity throughout the season, see the Hatches page. It also includes general timing of the hatches and some recommended fly patterns to use. As I get out to fish, I will post updates and info on the blog during the season.
